Inspired by online tests separating man from machine, the tapestry work: Captcha Quilt asks the viewer to identify all of the pumpkin leaves from amongst an assortment of plants. Rather than crosswalks and streetlights, viewers must prove their humanity with agricultural knowledge. Sowing together images of crops submitted by my counterparts in Malawi, the resulting quilt depicts learning as conditionally related to shared values and presumptions. Quilting, like farming, is an often overlooked skill set taking many years to learn. Having spent a year learning how to quilt, I integrate the themes of this artwork into its creation, an embodied act of learning.
